Telemedicine Providers – Their Types and Functions

Telemedicine has made it convenient for medical practitioners all around the world to connect with their patients through the internet. Telemedicine solutions need a web platform; every device used for communication in telemedicine services needs to be connected to the internet and a web server to store and relay patient data and information related to the doctor’s diagnosis. Such services are provided by Telemedicine providers who lend their technical expertise in setting up of a telemedicine system.

There are generally four types of telemedicine providers that manage and deliver Telemedicine services:

  • Self-Monitoring: Some of these companies provide self-monitoring devices, which are able to detect and recognize when a patient experiences a health issue such as a heart attack, fall or seizure. These devices come with in-built alert transmitters which send an alert to the nearby hospital or healthcare clinic, allowing doctors to quickly respond to such emergencies. Some devices even come with a smartphone app for easier control and monitoring.
  • Store and Forward: It is the technique of recording medical data such as images and bio signals, which are sent to a specialist who processes the received information. Common medical fields that use the store and forward system are radiology, dermatology and pathology. It speeds up the diagnosis process and is helpful in case of medical emergencies where quick diagnosis is required.
  • Virtual Consultation: There are various companies that offer online appointments with doctors on demand. They have a large network of registered doctors and physicians who provide virtual consultations to patients via the web. Most of these services are online only, with the patient having to book an appointment directly with the doctor in case of a physical visit.
  • Telemedicine Software: In addition to providing software for the above facilities, telemedicine providers also design additional software for use in telemedicine such as video conferencing, web servers, and data storage and payment management systems.
